15 th Jakarta Biennale – SIASAT
The Jakarta Biennale (JB) is a contemporary art exhibition held biannually in Jakarta, Indonesia. It offers a variety of cultural activities for local citizens and international visitors, and this year showcases the city as an area in constant movement and flux.
The Jakarta Biennale was first held in 1968 under the name Grand Exhibition of Indonesian Painting (Pameran Besar Senu Lukis Indonesia) at Jakarta Arta Center, Taman Isnail Marzuki. Along with major developments and changes in the realm of visual arts as well as in Indonesian society, the exhibition evolved by engaging more cultural activities destined to the wider public. It opened new potential to revitalise public spaces in the city, through collabroative works between artists, creative workers and local citizens.
In 2013, a diverse array of contemporary artworks by local and international artists will be on display. This edition attempts to embrace the role of the citizens of Jakarta, the art communities and the alternative spaces, as well as the artists and activists that form the cultural landscape of the city. The event will also offer educational activities that include lectures, workshops, and discussions for students, academics and the general public.
