Bengkel Pemetaan Kampung Bandar Dalam

(Kampung Bandar Dalam Cultural Mapping Workshop)

Kampung Bandar Dalam community is the only remaining traditional Malay village in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Their daily life retains the vivid and rich traditional Malay culture. Most local residents, also the experts and scholars in the field believe that the community is a place that inherits the Malay national spirit and Malay traditions and should be preserved as a “Kuala Lumpur Folklore Culture Village” in order to inherit the heritage of Malay culture.

This project intends to combine Lostgens’ Contemporary Art Space (Malaysia) and the Department of Architecture of TamKang University (Taiwan) to jointly organize workshops to promote the community experience in Taiwan.

One of the curators of this project, Yeoh Lian Heng, the founder of Lostgens’ has been closely connected with Kampung Bandar Dalam community for many years. In December 2015, he co-curated “Transaction in the Field” master class program with the Goethe Institute Kuala Lumpur. More than 20 curators and artists from all over the world were invited to visit this community, opening up the opportunity for community residents to “imagine the future of the village through art”.

The co-curator, Lo Hsiu-Chih (independent curator, Taiwan) visited this community in January and promoted the idea of cultural and community exchanges. Meanwhile, the other co-curator, Huang Jui-Mao (the dean of the Department of Architecture at TamKang University, Taiwan) has many years of academic and practical experience in the community reconstruction.

Through the workshops, Taiwan shares and exchanges valuable experience on culture and art with Malaysia in creating the concept of “imagine the future of the village through art”.

Art and Culture Mapping Workshop

by visual artists and local community

This workshop includes a first draft of an art map and two drafts of a cultural map. Art Map uses “Curatorial Topography” as a method to discuss how to present local cultural characteristics through alternative artistic practices, and come up with the imaginary future community.

The cultural map has two parts. First part takes the local landscape and important fields as the protagonist, depicting the “Kampung Bandar Dalam Culture Map” with historical depth and imaginary future; the other part uses the “people, culture, place, scenery, local production, etc., outline the “Kampung Bandar Dalam Cultural Calendar” with a taste of local favors.

These three final results dedicated to all residents of Kampung Bandar Dalam, as the basic reference for the future “Arts and Cultural base”; at the same time serve as the foundation of cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Malaysia.
