TATF was organised by the Lostgens’ Contemporary Art Space, developed in collaboration with German artist Susanne Bosch and Yeoh Lian Heng, the Goethe-Institut Malaysia and researcher Herman Bashiron Mendolicchio from Spain.
Participants
This transition revealed and exposed the participants with the diverse yet highly complex socio-political structures of the country which is often segmented by races, languages and religions.
TATF’s approach to this complexity is a participatory framework that allows all participants to learn, share, experience and practice their insights at eye level. There were 22 participants from all over Asia and Germany. They are:
Alecia Neo (Singapore) • Alex Lee (Malaysia) • Alice Ko Nien Pu (Taiwan) • Bhumin Dhanaketpisarn (Thailand) • Caique Tizzi (Germany) • Chen Guan Jhang (Taiwan) • Dijuwadi (Indonesia) • Elaine Ho Wing-Ah (China/USA) • Hayman Oo (Myanmar) • Jakob Bartnik (Germany) • Lawai Ului Jok (Malaysia) • Lee Cheah Ni (Malaysia) • Lee Chun Fung (Hong Kong) • Lim Paik Yin (Malaysia) • Manila bartnik (Germany) • Misako Ichimura (Japan) • Okui Lala (Malaysia) • Renan Laruan (The Philippines) • Rika Aki (Japan) • Tey Beng Tze (Malaysia) • Zikri Rahman (Malaysia) • Zulu Kageyama (Japan)
The structure of the masterclass follows the idea of offering an intensive learning programme with real life projects and experiential learning in diverse settings. The first week of TATF was largely based at Lostgens’. During the masterclass, the participants worked together in smaller teams in on- and off times of the program where they developed many future projects and interventions in depth. The masterclass was run as an Open Space which gave maximum responsibility and power to the participants to create their own programme.

An archive exhibition (19 – 26 November) was also set up by the participants at Lostgens’ as an organic collaborative process of engaging with each others’ materials. In addition, there were also several sharing sessions opened to the public by the participants and invited guest speakers to talk on various contemporary issues.
While on the second week it moved to a Malay village called Kampung Bandar Dalam located at the border of the Selangor state. The participants were invited to a monthly open mic poetry night where they decided to actively contribute with performances (singing, dance, speech, poetry reading or even playing a game). The show was also broadcasted by the local radio station. The participants also self-initiated the idea to develop a Transaction-Dinner in the village on the final day as a public intervention where they were given a kitchen to prepare 11 courses using entirely local ingredients from the village market. The dinner was conducted in a performative manner for 60 people.
