Social Engaged Art Curating in Taiwan

‘People as Centre’ is a critical point of curating Socially Engaged Art. This talk will focus on this point and take the exhibition “Micro Micro Revolution”, taking place in the summer of 2015 at CFCCA, Manchester, as a case study. This exhibition aims to explore the power of art as a vehicle to address social change in Taiwan through three socially-engaged art projects: “A Cultural Action at the Plum Tree Creek”, “Plant-Matter Needed” and “500 Lemon Trees”. These ongoing process-based, participative projects use art as a vehicle for addressing environmental issues, as a form of resistance, and as a platform for exchange. The great challenge of this exhibition is how to present socially engaged art projects that might be very rooted on specific culture and local socio-political context to the oversea audiences who might even not know where Taiwan is. Through this exhibition, some related socially-engaged art projects from Taiwan will be introduced.

Bio

Pei-Yi LU is a curator, researcher and art critic, based in Taipei. PhD in humanity and Cultural Studies (London Consortium), University of London. Her research interests are off-site art, museum studies and curating in theory and practice. A research-based book edited by her Contemporary Art Curating in Taiwan (1992-2012) was nominated the 10th Award of Art China. Her publications include “Off-Site Art in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China” Special Issue of Yishu: Journal of Chinese Contemporary Art (2010), the edited book Creating Spaces- Post Alternative Spaces in Asia (2011) and the book Off-Site Art curating (2011). She was an associate curator of 8th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale “We Have Not Participated” (2014); curator of “Micro Micro Revolution”(2015) for Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA); co-curator of “The 5th Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition-Negative Horizon”(2016). She had been teaching at Taipei National University of the Arts and Hong Kong Chinese University.Now, as a program leader of Critical and Curatorial Studies of Contemporary Art (CCSCA) at National Taipei University of Education.
