Conservation and Dismantlement

Tainan Neighbourhoods and Communities Site Survey Project

“Art-integrated space” has, in recent years, become a common creative concept in Taiwan and other nations. Regardless of the form of integration, or whether the subject is a particular community or a symbolic site, this type of art tends to place less emphasis on the artist(s) and focuses on the dialogue sparked between the art endeavor(s) and the local setting and residents.

Tainan is home to many historical streets and iconic renovated sites, and in addition to serving as a venue for art exhibitions, the location of the Absolute Space for the Arts places it in an opposing push-and-pull between “conservation” and “dismantlement”.

The project, Conservation and Dismantlement – Tainan Neighborhoods and Communities Site Survey Project, stems from this prolonged dilemma, which has led to this collaboration with the Lostgens’ contemporary art space from Malaysia. The project is subsidized by the Ministry of Culture through its program, “Grants for Cultural Exchanges and Collaborative Projects with Personnel from Southeast Asia”. Forced evictions, dismantlement, and protests have been unfolding in communities in Tainan, Kuala Lumpur, and also other cities. Despite what the specific causes are, political, economic, or cultural motives are apparent in the situations that have gradually taken shape in Tainan and Kuala Lumpur in the last decade; there are, nevertheless, many other factors that can’t be easily exposed, and they have gradually transformed into intangible but substantial chasms through time.

The Absolute Space for the Arts conducted the Neighborhood Publication Project in 2015, with communication with its local community opened up due to the project, and the Lostgens’ contemporary art space began integrating community issues with art engagements around 2004 to 2006. This residency project entails the following two events: Taiwan-Malaysia Exchange Forum and Presentation and Seminar on the Tainan Neighborhoods and Communities Site Survey Project. Speakers are invited to share their community experiences and what they have learned, observed, discussed throughout this residency site survey project, which also includes records documenting a workshop that creates rubbings around the neighborhood. The objective of the events is to spark different discussions and reflections on issues related to the community, historical memories, collective experiences, psychological conditions, and projections of power.
