Remembering Tiananmen, Mourning Democracy
We are a group of Malaysian citizens who are concerned about and cannot forget how the Chinese authorities used troops and arms to kill hundreds, if not thousands, of unarmed student protesters and other civilians in 1989 around the Tiananmen Square in Beijing. A quarter of a century has passed, but the innocent blood has not yet dried on the killers’ hands.
At the beginning of 2014 a global campaign initiated by Wang Dan, a prominent student leader and witness of the crackdown in 1989, and others to mark the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre kicked off with relay hunger strikes by pro-democracy activists in Beijing, Taipei, and New York. There was also a call for people around the world to hold commemorative events so that voices in support of a vindication of the 1989 democratic movement would reverberate around the globe.
