AIR Talk
Australia Artist Talk by Tobias Richardson & Hayley West
Please come along to our presentation where we will discuss our individual practices, collaborative projects, involvement in festivals and residencies, and our experiences running the only artist-run-initiative in the Top End of Australia.
We’ll also discuss the challenges for non-indigenous artists living and working in a remote and regional town in Australia, where the focus is predominately on indigenous art, and the art scene in the rest of Australia through our eyes.
Bio
Hayley West (b. Melbourne 1971). Since graduating with a BFA (Sculpture) from RMIT University in 1998 Hayley has been exhibiting in Artist Run Initiatives (ARI), public art spaces and contemporary art spaces throughout Australia. After arriving in Darwin in 2004 she became the Administrator/Coordinator of the ARI Darwin Visual Arts Association Inc. (DVAA) for four years. Hayley’s art practice is primarily sculptural/installation based, with recent exploration into photography and performance.
Tobias Richardson (b. Sydney 1968) studied at San Francisco Art Institute (USA) and at East Sydney Technical College, and for the past two decades has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Tobias moved to the Northern Territory in 1997 to work as a teacher in remote Indigenous communities before settling in Darwin where he is currently Lecturer in Studio Practice at Charles Darwin University. He was the Chair of DVAA for five years. Tobias’ work crosses many disciplines including sculpture, installation, collecting and painting.
Both artists are dedicated to increased networking with other ARIs nationally and internationally. A key interest is in expanding dialogue between regional and remote areas within Australia (rather than predictably looking to the southern cities) and to our neighbours in the Southern Hemisphere.
