Like Someone In Love

Solo Exhibition by Chi Too

OUR ArtProjects is delighted to present chi too’s fourth solo exhibition, Like Someone In Love. Like Someone In Love dispenses with broader political themes and reflection on the personal altogether. Instead, chi too has devised a system for painting that interferes with our habitual need to carelessly invest meaning into shapes and forms.

In this new series of painting, chi too uses sheets of bubble wrap for his painting support. It requires chi too to painstakingly inject a small amount of paint into each bubble air pocket with a syringe. The rows and columns of the bubble wrap provides chi too with a compositional grid. Following this formula, he would explore the most basic configurations of the colour palette – from the monochrome, to opposite colours, to gradient chart.

Each painting contains thousands of bubble air pockets. The process is one of repetition, requiring a level of patience and precision. One cannot help but feel that the finished work, though inert, carries within its surface an energetic change that intimates a degree of artistic endurance.

In effect, Like Someone In Love becomes a metaphor for the ideals that chi too seeks to make visible – of giddy concentration and of pedantic craftsmanship. In doing so, the paintings also become a visualisation of labour.
