Natascha Borowsky

Residency Duration: Aug – Oct 2008

Natascha Borowsky (b. 1964 Düsseldorf, Germany) studied with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Academy of Arts, Düsseldorf, Germany, graduating with a Master degree.

Since 2006, she has been teaching at the University of Krefeld, Germany. Her conceptual approach towards her art practice is by engaging daily objects as materials with an analog large format camera.

Natascha draws attention to the smallest moments in our world of objects, the aesthetic value of which would usually be largely overlooked. She often collects objects from nature or daily use where she views them as sculptural forms in their enlargements through her photography practice.

Her works can be found in public art collections in Germany. She had numerous solo exhibitions in Germany and Switzerland, where she also participated in many group exhibitions in the Netherlands, Finland, Russia and Switzerland.

In 2008 from August to October Natascha came to Malaysia participating in an artist-in-residence program on invitation of the Goethe-Institut Kuala Lumpur and the Lost Generation Art Space.

Natascha now lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Teh Leong Kwee

Residency Duration: 2008

The late Teh Leong Kwee (1953 – 2008) was an artist and art educator born in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. He was artistically gifted even in his formative years. After graduating from high school, he boarded on a faithful cruise ship at Port Klang where he would set himself on a life-changing journey as a young wanderer. For the next ten years, he travelled to India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Turkey, Germany, Italy and eventually to Switzerland where he would study at the Basel School of Design. The decade of travelling had immensely enriched him in cross cultural sensitivity which not only shaped his worldview but also his explorative approach in controlled and incidental interaction as an integral part of his art practice.

Leong Kwee passed away in 2008 months after he completed his residency program with us.

An exhibition Remembering A Journeyman: Tribute To Teh Leong Kwee was held in the then Annexe Gallery (Central Market) where the show attempted to provide an insight into the creative and artistic explorations of his involvement in art, music, art education and ultimately a celebration of his life. Exhibited items include his paintings, drawings and unorthodox musical instruments crafted by him. Leong Kwee touched the hearts and minds of many who journeyed with him through his lessons in graphic design and typography. Visitors were also shared with his alternative views on art and music. And most of all, his passionate and infectious interventions in humanity, spirituality and philosophy.
