Asia Art Space Network
Asia-Kula, Kula Ring
Kula is a concept that proposes new directions for cultural exchanges in Asia. “Kula”originated from the barter exchange among the indigenous people in the Trobriand Islands, Melanesia and it can be an experimental solution to the crisis we are facing now in contemporary society.
As an alternative to the Imperialist power dynamics based on dominant-subordinate relationships, the act of exchanging gifts works to achieve mutual benefits, promote respect for others and support social norms. The ACC considers this act of exchanging gifts as a model for cultural and artistic exchanges.
Through ACC Network Platform: Asia Kula Kula-ring, based on this concept of Kula that focuses on the importance of reciprocity and respect, the ACC would like to lay groundwork for connecting art spaces, so-called “Kula-zones,” across Asia.
