Asking for Advice
Performed Videography from Pekka Kantonen
In 2005, Pekka Kantonen, Finnish artist and journalist visited Malaysia with his wife, artist Lea Kantonen and their 3 children. He presented his video diaries to the local audience in Lost Generation Space. The event was part of a series of presentations titled “Asking for Advice” made in Southeast Asia ( Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore). The concept of of this video diaries is a documentation of various aspects of their family life, organised under various themes, filmed daily over a span of 25 years presentation. The screening also acts as a feedback session, allowing the freedom of the audience to choose from a selection of video diaries and to provide their feedback to the material. The feedbacks are then documented and constitute part of the videography.
Now, Pekka’s eldest son, Pyry Kantonen, is back in KL with a selections that include feedback collected during the last tour. These videos contain sensitive memories, narratives and relational experiences. When viewed after a span of time, it can invoke insight and regret, emotional outbursts and conflicts, personal and consequencial.
This artform can be coined as Generational Filming and audience can look at various case studies. Such as the ones on Hot Soup or about spying and counter-spying. The event will be recorded and audience’s permission will be asked when footage of the responses are used for projections.
