Exhibition of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting
by Malaysian Chinese Educators
On the 10th anniversary of Mr. Sim Mow Yu’s passing, a special exhibition on the calligraphy works and paintings of Chinese Malaysian educators in Kuala Lumpur was held. This exhibition brings together authentic art works of Mr. Sim and other Chinese educators (such as Lim Lian Geok, Kong Xiangtai, Guan Zhenmin etc.) who are related to the history of Chinese education in Malaysia in order to commemorate Mr. Sim’s life and the contributions he made to Chinese education in Malaysia.
In addition to exhibiting painting and calligraphy works, the exhibition also allocated a special area to showcase a before (photo) and after (physical) comparison display of restoration works done on paintings and calligraphy. This is to encourage the learning of appreciation for painting and calligraphy. At the same time, we hope that the exhibition visitors could also gain some knowledge on painting and calligraphy restoration techniques. We wish to draw people’s attention to and provoke their thinking on the effort that goes into preserving and maintaining painting and calligraphy works, so that they would realize the importance of cultural heritage brought around by paintings and calligraphy.
In line with the theme and contents of the special exhibition, a variety of educational activities were held for people of all ages. These activities include forums, lectures, sharing sessions on experiences and ideas, guided tours, hands-on activities etc. In hopes of such combination of static displays and interactive forms of activities would enhance the attractiveness and richness of this special exhibition. People would be able to experience a visual feast and come into direct contact with the charm of traditional skills and craftsmanship.
